Season 5 Episodes 41 and 42 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Triple Deke and Sweep. This week was a shortened lineup with only Tim Braun and Rob Gilreath being present. Tim and Rob were joined by Ryan Steig, creator of thetripledeke.com. In these episodes, the guys discussed St. Thomas’ season, the CCHA standings, the final weekend in CCHA league play, Michigan Tech’s upcoming series against St. Thomas and former Husky Brian Halonen making his NHL debut.

St. Thomas Season Review

The guys started the conversation by reviewing St. Thomas’ season. Most of the focus was on their recent play, which Rob pointed out has been atrocious. Ryan talked about how depleted the St. Thomas roster is and how they’ve been playing two defenseman at the forward position. Ryan also talked about St. Thomas not being able to produce a full line chart due to injuries.

All Things CCHA

The guys sprinkled in conversation about the CCHA and the standings throughout the episodes. Tim pointed out how close the conference is packed together with only 6 points separating third and seventh in the standings. The guys talked about Bemidji State being in the drivers seat for winning the league. They guys mentioned a graphic that THG Discord user DrunkTrainPolka put together showing the possible finishing points and positions for the CCHA teams.

The guys also talked about their dislike of the CCHA scheduling, which resulted in teams not playing an even number of games until the last weekend of the season. All of the guys agreed that they didn’t want to see that happen again in future years.

The guys also touched on the officiating within the CCHA this season. All of the guys thought that the consistency of calls needed to improve moving forward. Tim expressed frustration at the difference in what got called a penalty between Friday night and Saturday night games.

Towards the end of the show, the guys discussed how bad of a year it was for the CCHA as a league. The guys discussed the league’s out of conference record and its team’s low positions in the Pairwise rankings.

Bowling Green Series Review

Once Ryan left, Tim and Rob were able to have some quality alone time. They spent it discussing Michigan Tech’s recently completed series against Bowling Green. Tim thought that Michigan Tech’s deep roster was finally paying off given the number of injuries the team has. Rob admitted that he got bored of the ass kicking during Friday’s game. The guys talked about the number of scoring chances that Michigan Tech had during the Friday game.

Tim and Rob also talked about the nice puck movement that Michigan Tech showed on a couple of their goals on the weekend. They also discussed some of Michigan Tech’s penalty kills on the weekend and how those helped to swing momentum into their favor.

St. Thomas Series Preview

Closing the show, Tim and Rob talked about Michigan Tech’s upcoming series against St. Thomas. Rob thought the weekend is set up for a Michigan Tech sweep given St. Thomas’ injury situation. Tim agreed with Rob’s assessment and hoped that Tech could lock up the #2 seed in the CCHA conference tournament.
