Season 5 Episode 7 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Misfits Minute with President Kellan Meloche. This week, Rob Gilreath got to put on his “Bob Barker hat” and play the host role and was joined by Dustin Lindstrom and Matt Cavender. The guys’ guest this week was Misfits President Kellan Meloche. In this episode, they discussed Kellan’s path to becoming the Misfits President, the Misfits recent trip to Minnesota-Duluth (UMD), Tech’s game last weekend against UMD, the CCHA results from last weekend and a preview the Tech’s upcoming series against Alaska Fairbanks.

Fire in the hole!

Matt took the driver seat for the beginning of the episode by asking some rapid fire questions of Kellan. The first asked Kellan to share how he became the Misfits president. Kellan revealed the shocking news that he didn’t attend a single Tech hockey game his freshman year and that he became more involved during his sophomore year. He talked about deciding to run for President during last season’s Allentown Regional which he attended.

Matt then asked about the Misfits recent trip to Duluth, Minn. to watch Tech play against UMD. Kellan talked about the Tech fans out cheering the UMD fans as well as being happy with the result of the game. The guys briefly discussed the game at this point before revisiting it again later in the episode.

Matt’s next questions asked what Kellan was looking forward to this year and what trips he had planned for the Mistfits. Kellan was most excited to watch good hockey and talked about his goal of expanding the Misfits membership. He talked about the number of freshman that traveled to UMD to watch and hoped that they would be lifelong Misfits. Kellan talked about the hockey schedule being poorly timed with exams and school schedule, but said there are plans in the work for the Misfits to travel to Bemidji State in the fall and Lake Superior State in the spring.

The last question Matt asked was his famous “double or mega lasagna” question. Kellan was WAY too prepared to answer it.

Weekend review

Matt thought that Tech looked fast as a team this past weekend, but pointed out a couple aspects of their game that need cleaning up. Rob talked about Tech coming out strong early and continuing to come back and tying the game. Dustin was surprised to see so many newcomers and freshman in the lineup but thought that it would be good in the long run to have them getting play time against a team like UMD. Matt agreed and thought that it showed the trust that head coach Joe Shawan has in those players. The guys were disappointed that Tech didn’t make more of their powerplay chance in overtime, but were happy with the tie result as it will help Tech in the Pairwise rankings.

The guys also did a quick review the weekend for the CCHA as a whole. They talked about St. Thomas winning one game against St. Cloud State, Ferris State winning a game against Miami (OH) and Bowling Green winning a game against Robert Morris. The guys also talked about Lake Superior State playing as well as they did against Michigan State despite not winning a game. The guys discussed Clarkson winning against Notre Dame which could help Tech in the Pairwise later in the season.

Looking ahead

The guys briefly previewed Tech’s upcoming series against Alaska Fairbanks. All of the guys thought that it would be an important Pairwise weekend and Matt commented that anything less than a Tech sweep in unacceptable. Rob was looking forward to seeing the Misfits at home and Kellan said that they were hoping to “pack the Mac”. Rob talked about being an old fart and not being able to sit on the young kid side of the Mac anymore.

Towards the end of the show, the guys asked Kellan if there was anything that the Misfits needed. Kellan’s answer was “more noise” (for those of you who feel so inclined, you can find the Misfits Amazon wishlist here which contains items that they need throughout the season). Rob floated the idea of the Misfits doing Tifo for Tech hockey games during warmups.
