Season 5 Episodes 45 & 46 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Turd Ferguson and Dumb and Dumber Chance. This week, Tim Braun, Dustin Lindstrom, Rob Gilreath and Matt Cavender were joined by Jack Hittinger who covers the CCHA for USCHO.com. This weeks the guys discussed Michigan Tech’s playoff series against Bowling Green, the other CCHA playoff series, Michigan Tech’s upcoming playoff game against Minnesota State, Minnesota High School hockey and Patron questions.

Rollin’

The guys started the show by discussing the video of a Union hockey player performing the national anthem on recorder.

Then, moving to the real content of the episode, they discussed the quarter final matchups in the CCHA playoffs. Jack was surprised at the lack of series going to three games and Tim agreed given the lack of sweeps during the regular season conference play.

The guys switched it up and focused on Michigan Tech’s series against Bowling Green for a bit. Dustin talked about his bi-polar relationship with the Saturday game and Tim talked about antagonizing the THG Discord during the goalie interference review. Rob thought that the Bowling Green goaltender had re-established himself in the net after the hit, and Matt agreed and expressed frustration at the outcome of the call. The guys continued debating whether or not the call was correct for several minutes.

Down Another Day

The next CCHA playoff series the guys discussed was the series between Ferris State and Bemidji State. They talked about the Friday game being crazy and the comeback Bemidji State completed. Jack talked about Ferris State controlling the first ten minutes of the game before Bemidji State was allowed to settle in and control the remainder. Jack also pointed out that this was the first playoff series in which Bemidji State has beaten Ferris State.

Loser

Moving on, the guys covered the series between Northern Michigan and Minnesota State. Tim was surprised the series didn’t go to three games and thought that Northern Michigan outplayed Minnesota State in both games despite not winning them. Rob expressed his lack of sadness at Northern Michigan’s season ending.

Ready To Go

Changing their focus to the future, the guys discussed Michigan Tech’s upcoming playoff game against Minnesota State. Jack asked the group how they felt about the matchup and Dustin commented that Michigan Tech fans have lingering pain from recent years of playing Minnesota State. Matt thought that the game would be low scoring and chippy and picked Michigan Tech to win. Dustin talked about Minnesota State peaking a month ago and not looking strong. Tim discussed the fact that this is a one game series which means anything can happen in either series.

It’s Like That Y’all

After covering the game results, the guys spent some time discussing the CCHA and how the league sits on the national level. They talked about past CCHA teams beating the top teams from other conferences during the national tournament and how the CCHA has sent two teams to the national tournament eight times since the conference reshuffle. They discussed this being a down year for the CCHA and how that might affect the opinion of those fans who don’t watch CCHA games regularly.

Re-Arranged

The guys talked about some of the recent coaching changes from around the CCHA and nationwide. Specifically, Matt brought up the retirement of Stonehill head coach David Borges. Matt hoped that David’s retirement would allow Stonehill to invest more into the program and let it grow. The guys brought up the coaching vacancy at Lindenwood too, but the main focus of the conversation was Bowling Green firing head coach Ty Eigner. Jack and Tim expressed a little surprise at the move, but warmed up to it once they started looking at the lack of post-season success for Bowling Green during Eigner’s tenure. Matt thought it was an opportunity for Bowling Green to wipe the slate clean given the drama that occurred this past off-season. The guys speculated on some possible coaching candidates for the open position.

Show Me What You Got

At the end of the show Tim asked Jack two Patron questions. One asked whether Stonehill hockey or Limp Bizkit lyrics were worse. The other asked if Lego people live in houses made of their own skin.

Cut for time

This week’s cut time for Patrons is approximately 7 minutes long. Tim messed up the intro to the show. There was a conversation on Minnesota High School hockey.
