Season 4 Episode 17 of the Chasing MacNaughton Podcast from Tech Hockey Guide; Playoff Roulette. This week, Tim Braun, Dustin Lindstrom and Rob Gilreath were joined by the voice of Ferris State Bulldog hockey Harrison Watt. In this episode they discussed how Ferris State has been playing lately, last weekend’s series for Tech against St. Thomas, the CCHA standings, the Joe Shawhan Hour, and their predictions as to who will win the MacNaughton Cup.

How does Ferris State look?

Harrison talked about Ferris shutting out Lake Superior State on Friday and feeling OK about their performance, however was disappointed at ending the weekend with a split. Much to Tim’s dismay, Harrison thought that the Ferris players were excited to be heading into the series against Michigan Tech. Harrison talked about Ferris not scoring a ton and the guys discussed Tech scoring by committee this season. There was a discussion on the special teams for Tech, and everyone agreed it has been atrocious.

St. Thomas series recap

The guys talked about how close the Friday game was against the Tommies, and Tim discussed being content with Tech going 3-1 against the Tommies this season. Rob brought up the sickness that has been going around the Tech locker room and the guys discussed how much the team misses Arvid Caderoth when he is out of the lineup. The guys discussed the “no goal” for Tech which was reviewed and remained as called on the ice. The guys briefly mentioned the new rink which St. Thomas announced the day after recording.

CCHA discussion

To start the CCHA discussion, the guys discussed the conference’s non-conference record and how poor the league performed outside of Michigan Tech and Minnesota State. Tim brought up some of the KRACH rankings for the league. The guys discussed the lack of desire from the east coast hockey schools to play western hockey schools. Tim briefly talked about Bowling Green sweeping Bemidji State and how that helps Tech.

Harrison asked the guys a question about whether they’d rather play Northern Michigan, Ferris State, or St. Thomas at home in the first round of the CCHA playoffs. Tim chose Northern for the rivalry and better matchup, Rob was slightly undecided but chose Northern as well. Dustin said he would not want Tech to play Ferris as they are the most dangerous of the three choices right now. Harrison then gave his thoughts on who he’d want Ferris State to play in the first round.

Towards the end of the show the guys gave their thoughts on who will win the MacNaughton Cup. With Bowling Green sitting at the top of the conference currently, Harrison said he would pick the field to win the Cup. Tim expressed his unhappiness at the uneven amount of games played between the CCHA teams and said he doesn’t expect Bowling Green to win out and win the Cup. Tim thought that Minnesota State has the best shot to end the season on top of the league, though he added that he thinks Michigan Tech and Bemidji State were his next choices. Rob added that he wants someone else beside Minnesota State to win the league but didn’t give an official prediction.

The Joe Show

There was a short discussion about this week’s Joe Shawhan Hour. The guys laughed at one of the questions asked to Joe and expressed their surprise that Tech is sitting at 13th in the Pairwise rankings at this point in the season. The guys talked about Michigan Tech goaltender Blake Pietila and the contributions he’s made to the teams this season, though Tim wasn’t thrilled at some of Blake’s GLI play.

Cut for time

This week’s cut time for Patrons is approximately six minutes long. The guys discussed some of the sortable stats on College Hockey News and the latest CCHA goaltender of the week. There was a discussion on getting to the NCAA regional locations. There was a discussion on Matt stirring the pot about ties.

  1. Don’t forget BU played at NMU last season. NMU had played at BU two or three years before that and got a win and a tie. I think NMU swept last season.
