Starting with the 2019-2020 season, the Joe Shawhan hour will add a video stream through Amazon’s platform, radio station WKMJ announced. The new format will not only provide a new dimension to the experience for fans, but will allow Shawhan and host Dirk Hembroff to illustrate game breakdowns using video from WCHA game feeds on

“Well, they say that video killed the radio star,” said Hembroff. “But really, it shouldn’t have to. We’re going to adapt and use video to make a better program for all of the Huskies fans out there. Half of our audience is students, and a lot of them are already watching eSports on Twitch, so why can’t we use Twitch to talk about traditional sports?”

Hembroff is not the only one excited for the transition. “Now, when I talk about guys not putting in the effort on the ice—not showing that passion and desire—I can show that very directly,” said Shawhan. “You don’t have to take my word for it at all. We can show you where certain players are failing at the basics, and talk about what needs to happen to fix those things.”

At press time, it is not clear whether Suzanne Sanregret, Michigan Tech’s Athletic Director, will require Shawhan to go through any media relations classes after displaying what many fans felt was an unusually candid attitude during last season’s shows. 1. Great follow-up to the announcement of a women’s hockey team from last year (smiley emoji goes here)
